Boosts UK welding electrode capacity to meet increasing sales
(25 February 2014) Luvata, a world leader in metal solution manufacturing, heat-transfer technology and engineering and design services, announces its resistance welding electrode manufacturing facility in Welwyn Garden City, UK has received its Lean certification. Lean is a world-renowned production philosophy made famous by Toyota, which focuses on minimizing waste in the pursuit of quality and value.
Luvata Welwyn Garden began its journey towards Lean in November 2011. Over the course of 2012-2013, measurable improvements were made with an emphasis on Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), Flow, Performance Management and People. As a result, lead times reduced by over a week, liberating much needed capacity in the light of increasing sales.
“With over 1.5 million vehicles manufactured in the UK during 2013, and an average of 4,000 spot welds per vehicle, that’s a lot of welds,” indicates Amanda Dawson, General Manager with Luvata Welwyn Garden. “With experts suggesting the UK will be the third biggest car manufacturer in Europe by 2017, it’s important that we, as a supplier to the automotive industry, also keep pace,” believes Dawson.
“There is a strong team spirit and common sense of purpose here in Welwyn Garden,” continues Dawson. “Lean activities were aligned with the business priorities and it's enabled us to be more responsive to customer requirements including shorter lead times.”
In the highly automated and competitive world of automobile manufacturing, high strength alloys, coated metals and varying metal thickness require different types of electrodes to ensure an optimal weld. Luvata manufactures internationally recognized electrode brands such as Nitrode®, A-Trode® and Z-Trode®, each specifically designed for predictable weld performance.
