Donation will support the manufacture of 500 water purification systems
(17 April 2012). Luvata, a world leader in metal solution manufacturing, heat transfer technology and engineering and design services, has made a donation of copper materials to EDGE Outreach, an international nonprofit organization that delivers training and equipment for safe drinking water to nearly 400,000 people each year.
Luvata’s donation of copper tube hairpins, which are often used in the manufacture of heat exchangers, will be used to manufacture 500 of EDGE’s highly efficient and effective water purification systems that can each sanitize up to 10,000 gallons (38,000 liters) of water per day.
The technology is simple, easy to use, and easy to teach others. The process uses a handful of salt and a 12-volt battery to produce chlorine gas, which is then pumped into contaminated water. It eliminates more than 99.9% of the bacteria and parasites that claim the lives of 3.6 million people each year.
Kurtis Daniels, Director of Training and Field Operations with EDGE Outreach, said, “We previously purchased raw tubing in 20’ lengths, which then required skilled labour and special equipment to cut, solder and manufacture the heat exchanger, a critical piece in the manufacture of EDGE’s water purification system. Luvata’s donation saves us weeks worth of work and headaches sourcing the raw materials and manufacturing this piece ourselves,”
“With over a billion people worldwide still lacking access to reliable supplies of clean water, we appreciate Luvata’s donation to our efforts,” indicates Daniels. “EDGE’s primary goal is to prevent sickness and death from waterborne disease and every partnership we form is helping us to improve water quality in communities around the world.”
John Peter Leesi, CEO at Luvata said, “The work EDGE Outreach undertakes is life-saving and essential, so we are pleased to be able to support them with a solution that will have a positive impact on their efforts to bring clean water to many more people.”
Luvata is a world leader in metal solutions manufacturing and related engineering services. Luvata’s solutions are used in industries such as renewable energy, power generation, automotive, medicine, air-conditioning, industrial refrigeration, and consumer products. The company’s continued success is attributed to its longevity, technological excellence and strategy of building partnerships beyond metals. Employing over 6,400 staff in 13 countries, Luvata works in partnership with customers such as Siemens, Toyota, CERN, and DWD International.
About EDGE Outreach
EDGE Outreach is a Louisville, Kentucky based 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to bring clean drinking water to developing communities and disaster environments around the world. They work every day to put an end to the global water crisis by training and empowering ordinary people to provide safe and sustainable water, sanitation, health, and hygiene solutions in their own communities. Since 2001, EDGE has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in more than 23 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, India, Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. When EDGE staff and volunteers travel to a developing community to build training centers and install these systems, they also teach nationals how to diagnose their water problems, operate the purification system, repair broken hand pumps, and educate them on effective health and hygiene practices.
