Golden vault showcases Luvata Nordic Royal
(31 March 2011). Luvata, the global metals and manufacturing specialist, is helping Stockholm’s ground-breaking new Sven-Harry’s art museum and gallery become a striking architectural icon for the city. The museum and gallery is wrapped in a 5000m2 blanket of shimmering gold made from Luvata Nordic Royal™, an alloy of copper, with aluminium and zinc that maintains its warm golden shade.
Hailed as the Golden Vault, the building at Vasa Park includes apartments, restaurant, gallery and art museum, which will be home to 150 works of art from Sven-Harry’s own collection in addition to others from Carl Fredrik Hill, August Strindberg and Helene Schjerfbeck.
Luvata was responsible for all of the materials and corresponding installation of the eye-catching façade, including the manufacturing of the roof and façade system to exact specifications to make installation even easier. The installation involved a traditional double-lock standing seam roof with perforated ceiling and roof coverings in addition to the façade claddings. On the balcony dividing walls a woven mesh made of Nordic Royal was also included, adding further dimension and appeal to the building’s exterior.
Unlike pure copper, which oxidizes overtime from a dark brown colour to its distinctive green patina, Nordic Royal has a thin protective oxide layer. As a result, the surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its lustre overtime. Still visible and beautiful on some of the oldest architectural masterpieces in Europe, copper continues to inspire works of art even today.
Sven-Harry Karlsson, founder of the construction company Folkhem and an avid art collector, is said to have one of the finest collections of Nordic art from the 1800-1900s and has been a strong proponent for modern contemporary art.
The new museum, designed by Wingårdhs Architects, one of Sweden’s leading architects, opened on 27th March and includes a top penthouse floor that is a replica of Sven-Harry’s first house. Meticulously planned and costing an estimated €150 million, the building is a mix of public and private areas surrounded by the timeless beauty of Luvata Nordic Royal.
“It is fitting to have one of architecture’s oldest and most durable materials protecting such precious pieces of art. The simple lines and contemporary look of the Nordic Royal façade complement the beautiful works inside the museum and gallery, and we are delighted to have been part of such an exciting project,” commented Juha-Pekka Susi, Manager for Building and Construction with Luvata Rolled Products.
