The use of high-quality OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper prevents blistering, which can impair the part’s electrical conductivity which is a critical requirement for the component. Applications Vacuum Interrupters Innovation at Luvata Luvata Welshpool developed a cost-effective method to cold form the vacuum interrupter’s head and stem as a single component, replacing the previous process of machining them separately and brazing them together during assembly. This gives much greater mechanical integrity whilst saving time and materials. Today, we continue to provide innovative solutions for power generation and distribution. We supply many components using oxygen-free, high conductivity material. Oxygen-free material is vital to minimize power losses in power generation and distribution applications. Specifications of Copper Components for Vacuum Interrupters Contacts The vacuum interrupters contact materials have a large influence on its breaking capacity, electrical durability and interruption level of the current. The contacts are made from a copper-chromium alloy. Copper gives the contacts excellent electrical conductivity and chromium provides resistance to electrical erosion and reduces welding of the contacts. Contact stems To conduct the high current to and from the contact, the stem that supports the contact has to be made from high conductivity copper or a copper alloy. The stem also needs to conduct heat away from the contacts to prevent overheating, another reason why copper is the primary material for contacts and contact stems. The contact head and stem is usually cold-formed as one piece but Luvata also has the capability to manufacture as two separate pieces if the application or size requirement demands it.
