Luvata Superconductors Zhongshan Celebrates 20 Years of Business

Luvata Superconductors Zhongshan is a well-known producer of superconducting wire and cables for special magnets, most commonly used in MRI systems within healthcare industry. The company recently celebrated its 20th anniversary by bringing all employees together for a day filled with fun activities.

In early 2004, Luvata recognized the need to support the emerging MRI market in China. Establishing a local plant with local expertise was essential for improving communication with domestic manufacturers. This insight became the foundation for what would eventually become Luvata Superconductors Zhongshan, which focuses solely on producing superconducting wire and cables.

Luvata Superconductors Zhongshan was officially established in February 2006. Initially, the operation began as a department within an existing Luvata tube mill and later expanded into an independent company.

“We started operations with one customer and a handful of employees. Now we have over 130 employees serving our grown customer base, and a few of those employees are still part of the team,” says John Du, the General Manager of Luvata Superconductors Zhongshan.

Producing Thousands of Kilometers of Superconductors Every Year

After the first six years, Luvata Superconductors Zhongshan relocated in 2012 from the mill to a new facility in Zhongshan city, where the company continues to operate. The additional space enabled further expansion.

“Over the last 15–20 years we have experienced tremendous growth, going from several hundred kilometers of wire to tens of thousands of kilometers of wire” Du explains.

From the very beginning, the company has focused on producing superconductors for extremely powerful magnets, primarily used in healthcare. Over two decades, however, the product has evolved significantly.

“The applications have remained the same, but our product has developed through continuous learning and development. For example, we have transitioned from importing everything needed to moving up the value chain and producing more of our own. This enables us to offer more value to our customers, which is always our priority.”

Success Based on Open Communications

According to John Du, Luvata Superconductors Zhongshan’s success stems from a strong company culture and high productivity supported by cross-training and digitalized operations. In the future, successful operations will be continued by investing more in intelligent manufacturing.

“Digitalization naturally enhances productivity, but we also believe strongly in cross-training employees. It ensures smooth operations even in personnel changes or shortages. Our people can perform multiple tasks and are rewarded for upskilling, which benefits both company performance and personal growth,” Du notes.

Still, no company succeeds without engaged employees. Du considers the company culture to be one of its greatest strengths. Together with the management team, he practices low‑hierarchical leadership built on open and honest communication.

“I want my people to know me and trust me. We have an open-door policy, and I try to communicate with all our employees whenever possible. I am proud of our team spirit and our employees’ willingness to contribute their knowledge and skills every day so that we, as a company, can serve our customers the best possible way.”
